Memorial services for cancer researcher Werner Kirsten, 67, aformer professor and chairman of pathology at the University ofChicago, will be at 3 p.m. today in Bond Chapel, University ofChicago, 1025 E. 58th.
Dr. Kirsten, who died Dec. 24 in his Hyde Park home, was anexpert in RNA tumor viruses. In 1967, he discovered a virus, theKirsten MSV, in cultured mouse tumor cells. He subsequently used itto induce tumors in rodents, which helped show that viruses can be acause of cancer. His work in this area has been widely used inresearch.
He was chairman of the university's pathology department from1972 to 1988, He left to become director of the National CancerInstitute's Frederick Cancer Research and Development Center inMaryland.
