Qld: Lang Park redevelopment on tight deadline

By Paul Osborne

BRISBANE, Dec 2 AAP - Queensland's $280 million Suncorp Stadium redevelopment wouldbe finished on time despite problems plaguing the project, Deputy Premier Terry Mackenrothpledged today.

Speaking after touring the redeveloped Lang Park site with reporters, Mr Mackenrothsaid not even rain would disrupt the project which was on time and on budget.

"Basically the work that would be disrupted by rain - most of that is done now," MrMackenroth said.

"A lot of work can be done fitting out if it's raining, so I don't see that rain will delay it."

Mr Mackenroth said the "best stadium in the world" would host its first major match- a Broncos versus Newcastle rugby league game - on the weekend of May 31-June 1.

It will also host State of Origin and World Cup rugby matches next year.

When complete, the stadium will seat 52,500 people, with the closest seats only sixmetres from the touchline.

The project has not been without its problems.

Last week the government said a $12 million pedestrian walkway would be delayed byabout a year while further planning proceeded.

There have also been concerns about the stadium meeting its target of getting 80 percent of people attending matches onto buses and trains.

And in June, a large slab of concrete, which collapsed in strong winds, triggered awork stoppage over safety concerns.

But perhaps the most vexing problem is where to put the statue of rugby league legendWally Lewis, which was packed away for safe keeping just before construction started.

Lewis, who toured the site today, knows what he would like to do with it.

"Leave it in the box," he said.
