FUNNY OLD WORLD ; ALAN ROSS

WE all have significant moments in our lives. But do we realisethey are significant at the time? Two of mine that spring to mindare the morning at school that I met someone for the first time inthe tuck shop - remember them? Indirectly, I'm on the radio andwriting this column because of that meeting at the age of 14.

The other moment was when searching for a messageboard on theinternet accidentally put me and my other half in touch with eachother.

You never quite know how these chance things will develop, andwouldn't life be boring if we did? This week 50 years ago, there wasanother significant moment. I wonder whether the participantsrealised it at the time. Four lads from Liverpool did their firstlunchtime gig at an underground club which played jazz in theevenings but was experimenting with rock and roll at lunchtimes.

A hat-check girl at the club, one Priscilla White, startedsinging with them occasionally. And their fame spread.

A few months later, a man called Raymond Jones went into aLiverpool record store to ask for a record by the group which theyhad recorded while playing a series of concerts in Hamburg. It wascalled My Bonnie.

The shy son of the record shop owner who was on duty thatSaturday morning at NEMS Music Store was intrigued by the requestfor the record, and by the group's name. He wrote down on a pad:"Raymond Jones - Beatles record - investigate Monday."

A few days later he heard that they were playing at the Cavernand went to see them. He thought he might find out about the recordand get a few copies in, since he was being asked for it by aregular customer. Who knows, it might be popular ...
