PLASTICS CLAIMS UNDER FIRE.(Local)

Flanked by "disposable" diapers and trash bags that he said were examples of "green- collar fraud," New York Attorney General Robert Abrams on Monday backed efforts to make New York the first state to ban the use of the words "biodegradable," "degradable" or "photodegradable" in advertising for any plastic product.

The proposed law, which appears to have some support in both the Democrat-controlled Assembly and the Republican-controlled Senate, comes at a time when several plastics companies have already begun to drop degradability claims in the face of ongoing probes by Abrams and attorneys general in seven other states.
