BBC to release its classics on Internet

00-00-0000
Dateline: LONDONThe BBC announced Sunday that it will make decades of its classic television available to the public on Internet.

Wildlife footage and clips from well-known TV shows will be among the selected material to be released from the company's video vaults.

The project, the BBC Creative Archive, was outlined by British Broadcasting Corp. director Greg Dyke, with details still being finalized.

"The BBC probably has the best television library in the world," he said. "Up until now, this huge resource has remained locked up, inaccessible to the public... But the digital revolution and broadband are changing all that. For the first time, there is an easy and affordable way of making this treasure trove of BBC content available to all."

Speaking at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival, Dyke said downloading such information could be great for children doing homework on everything from dinosaurs to history.

Top entertainment shows may not be made available on Internet for free because sales of such programs on DVD and video are a lucrative source of BBC income. But clips of such shows probably will be.

There was no fixed date for the opening of the BBC archive.
